A Sculpture of Man for Our TImes

Study the images in this posting. The second image is a close-up of the torso and head of the 17 foot marble  statue of the biblical David by Michelangelo. It was sculpted in the years 1501-1504, at the height of the Renaissance in Italy. The last image is image is a triumphant equestrian statue in bronze of a military leader named Colleoni on his horse by sculptor, Verrochio. This was also created at the time of the Renaissance, in 1475. The top image is a life size statue of an anonymous man. It was created by Swiss sculptor, Giacometti. He made it in the 1950's.

How do the Renaissance images differ from the modern man image? List 5 elements/characteristics that show how the two types of images differ. What do you think the Renaissance artists felt and were trying to say about humans in their time?  What was the modern artist trying to communicate? If you were to create a statue to communicate your ideas of humans in our time in the form of a standing male statue, what kind of statue would you make? Would it be made of traditional materials like marble or bronze, or would it be made of found objects or electronics? Would it convey hope or loss of hope? Would it show man to be puzzled, forceful, weak or powerful? Write 2 paragraphs describing your statue idea and what you hope it would express.

  1. the differences between the statues have to do with the time period it was made. the david is a self portrait of a man while the skinny statue is a symbol for human qualities.

  3. The renascence statue is made of marble and looks smooth and elegant. The modern statues of the warrior looks big and powerful but the skinny statue looks like they lost hope.
My statue would be made of marble and be a life size statue of a man holding an American flag. The man would look strong and bold to show he is better than everybody else.

  4. The skinny guy is the more modern one and it has not much detail and is very skinny and almost seems as if its just the bones of a human. The older ones are way bigger and way more detailed.

The old ones symbolized that people have trust in the figure or that time period. The skinny one seems more weak and we cant trust it.

  5. Also the fifth reason was that you could tell who were in the older drawings but in the new one you cant tell at all.

  6. The rennaisance images are more realistic and they portray the feel of human qualities as compared to the abstract sculpture of the skinny man which has an ancient feel to the piece. The rennaisance pieces also have more of a smooth feel to it instead of the ancient one which is more rigid. The modern piece is more abstract because the distortion of the body parts instead of the proportional body parts of the other pieces of work. I think the rennaisance artists are trying to honor these people because the people are created in a more majestic way. The modern one is expressive but it doesn't have the same honorable feel to it, the artist wasn't trying too hard to express the traits of one specific person in this modern piece. The iconic rennaisance statues look more powerful and stronger whereas the skinny man looks weaker and he doesn't look as powerful.

The traits and characteristics of a statue I would make would be powerful and big. I would have a strong man made of metal because if the man looks metal he looks tougher and it gives a sense of power to the piece. If the man was made from something weaker like wood, it would give a person a weaker feel of the piece of art. When it I would make sure the man has an angry expression on his face just so he looks intimidating to the people who come to see it. When people see the piece I want them to think the man would be some heroic and iconic image. The piece would convey a sense of hope, like he was someone people would look up to and appreciate. The man would be very powerful so people although they would feel scared and intimidated, under all that they would have a feeling like they were protected and cared for

  7. The statue of David is a symbol of a strong man in the renascence. It is seventeen feet tall and represents man's morality. These older statues represent man's trust and confidence in themselves. the more modern statue represents man's lack of confidence in themselves. the statues are different in size, year made, material used, symbol it stands for, and mentality it has.

  8. The modern sculpture is more simplistic, whereas the the two renaissance sculptures are trying to be more life-like. The sculptures are also made out of different materials. The Giacometti statue is also smaller, portraying man as not as important as the David or the equestrian statue does. The Giacometti statue is also held in a smaller room in an art gallery whereas, the David statue is in a bigger room and the equestrian statue is outside, further emphasizing the importance of man. The Renaissance artists were trying to convey that man was the most important thing in the world, while the modern artists was trying to say that man is not that important.
If I were to create a statue of man, I would make a giant marble statue like the David. The man would be powerful, showing how far man has come.
I hope it would express the feeling that man was very important and without man, we would have nothing.

  9. 5 things that are differ from each sculpture are the material it is made of, the quality of the work, the style of the sculptures, the size of the sculptures are different, and the last thing is when and where they were made. Renaissance placed a large emphasis on the importance of the Madonna in art. Taking inspiration from classical Roman and Greek art, Renaissance artist were also interested in the human body. They attempted to idealize the human form and were shown in physical perfection and purity with expression and unique personality. The idea behind the art is generally more important than execution. Modern art tends to be abstract and in many case experimental and is conveyed in a plethora of media.

My statue would be probably a military person. I would choose I a military man because now days, everything is about war. Everyday I hear about war. His facial expression would be that of fatigue, because the war has lasted for what seems like an eternity. However, there would be a sense of hope in his face, hoping that the war will end soon and the future will be a better place than it is now. I would be the size of a man so that it seems real, also it would be made up of granite to show the significance of the statue.

  10. Renaissance art differs greatly from modern art because the portrayal of art during the Renaissance era focused on the precise and exact representation of the anatomy of man. This is because Renaissance artists were heavily influenced by an emerging humanism worldview, in which people now focused more on our world and humans than necessarily on God. The Renaissance works are more realistic looking, are bigger than the modern work, emphasize the powerfulness of mankind, are made from much more high quality materials, and the modern artwork has emphasis on the weakness of man and takes a more abstract approach to human representation. While Renaissance art centers on the human greatness by representing it through exact details, modern art focuses more on the idea of how humans are insignificant in our world, with the discovery of different planets and other topics. This represented by the frail, and inexact representation of man.
If i made a statue, it would be conveying the idea of the modern age by creating a man made out of stainless steel and other things such as ipods, cell phones, etc to show our technological age. The man would be standing upright and staring straight forward. It would have more exact human features, but would not have a face to show how we have entered an age of uncertainty.

  11. the renaissance sculpture is much more realistic than the modern one. The renaissance one is much larger and has a much more solid frame than the modern sculpture. The renaissance sculpture is very detailed while the modern one is merely a figure of a human.
My statue would be a renaissance type figure of a strong man on a horse yielding a sword. It would be very large and detailed. The sculpture would be made of solid marble.

  13. At first glance, I thought that the renaissance sculpture appeared more recently created. The modern sculpture of the life size man looks ancient. During the renaissance, ideas and inventions were rapidly arising. Questions of biology and and anatomy were thrown around many wondered what the perfect and ideal ma was supposed to look like. As seen in the two renaissance sculptures, artists are trying to portray the most manly and realistic man possible. The sculptures are much more detailed and they only cover the upper tear of society. The modern sculptures highlight all aspects and classes of society. Also, the renaissance sculpture is much more detailed highlighting the manly aspects of man. The modern sculpture highlights the weak aspects of man.

  14. My statue would be of a strong man similar to david. It would represent courage and the strength of humanity. He would have a blank face so one can visualize himself or herself as the stron person.

  15. By looking at the drawings I noticed that the newer drawings have more colors and have a lot more detail compared to the drawings in the past. The statue of David resembles a real human being. In the renaissance the sculptures were mainly about the significant heroes of the time. The material that the sculptures are made up of are different. The size of the sculptures are also pretty different. Some are massive as the others are small sculptures. - Justin Childress

  16. The renaissance sulptures seem to be more realistic and detailed than the modern sculptures. The renaissance sculptures also seem to be smoother compared to the exactness of the modern. The modern is more abstract because of the distortion of the body. The renaissance also portrays a stronger and bigger man, like the ideal back then.

My sculpture would be similar to the renaissance man because men should be portrayed as big and strong. Also, I like the realistic features in the older sculptures compared to the abstract sculpture of the modern time, which I dont think is very skillful.

  17. In the Renaissance age, artists tried to show their mastery of the human body so most pieces were naked so the artists could show the muscles. The Renaissance also produced much more realistic pieces of art than modern times. The modern artists try to convey so sort of emotion through their pieces rather than mastery of a certain trait. Despite the abstractness of the piece, it still provokes some sense of emotion for the viewer.
If I were to create a sculpture portraying the modern man, I would make it 2x scale to represent the power of the human race. I would have a man standing with his chest out to show his pride. I guess the sculpture would be closer to the Renaissance works than the modern work because mine would be somewhat realistic and portray a proud and strong man.

  19. Modern sculptors have a greater sense of individuality and creativity to them. Many artists have a different feel to them, and if you see a work of art from a famous person you would probably be able to identify it very quickly. The old Renaissance sculptors are on the other hand are very realistic with almost precise details. Many Renaissance artists have very similar traits and features to their work.
    -Alex Verdugo p. 6

If I had to create my own sculptor, it would probably contain both a realistic and creative aspect to it. I would probably try to be precise on the body and maybe distort the face and other exterior body body parts such as; the arms, hands, legs, and feet. Being able to add my own ideas into a sculptor would be very fun.

  20. One way that the Renaissance Art differs from the modern art is that the Renaissance shows a more realistic representation of a man. The Renaissance Art is also larger. The modern art on the other hand is smaller. The Renaissance Art also attempts to represent a real person while the modern art shows an anonymous man. Finally, the Renaissance artists show military leaders. I think the Renaissance artists were trying to portray strength while the modern artist was trying to portray weakness.

If I were to make a sculpture, I would make the small sculpture of a man. I would make it out of electronics, wires, glass, and weapons. I would make the man small and have him look confused and fearful, but also in a defensive pose.

My statue would represent the fear and uncertainty we have of the future. The glass would represent our fragility and the electronics would represent our technology. The weapons would reflect our wars and violence. The man appears small and fearful because he unsure of his future.

  21. modern day sculptures are less realistic that renaissance art. they seem to be more detailed, they look cooler i guess, and they're themes are different.

i dont know exactly what my sculpture would look like but it would definitely be swagged out. probably me picking off a pass from Peyton Maning to Reggie Wayne. That'd be kinda dope.
i like the realistic natre of these sculptures.

The materials are also very different: the Renaissance works were made out of marble and metal and had a nice clean finish while the modern work is made out of a rougher metal and has a much more textured finish. The large scale of Renaissance arts represents strength and power in the human while the brittle figure represents the flaws and weakness of humanity.

If I were to create a sculpture portraying the modern man, I would make it 2x scale to represent the power of the human race. I would have a man standing with his chest out to show his pride. 26. - they were all sculpted in different time periods
    - the older pieces have more detail and fine tuning
    - The modern art is crude and bold
    - They all depict strong male figures
    - the modern art has no arms
    - The modern piece appears larger

If I were to create a statue, I would construct a crying woman from marble. The image would have the detail of older time periods, but it would portray the pain and suffering of modern day. The woman would represent the marginalized people in this socially stratified society.

  29. The two renaissance statues differ from the modern statue because:
    1. The renaissance ones show men that seem to be at their prime in their life, while the modern one shows a man who seems to be disentegrated
    2. The renaissance ones show emotion in the statues, while the modern one shows to emotion
    3. The renaissance statues show the men looking off into the distance, both to their left, while the modern one is looking straight ahead, towards the ground
    4. The two renaissance statues are in greater detail and the modern one is in not great detail
    5. The two renaissance statues seem as if they belong and that they are their own person, while the modern one seems as if it is one of a million

If I was to create a statue for the modern man it would be of a man surrounded by common technology encircled around him. He would be in a suit and it would be made of plastic and real items. It would show him as if he were busy.

  30. The difference between the statues is that in the Renaissance time period the statues were created to be perfect, heroic looking people. They were larger than life and were to look like a perfect man. The modern statue is very skinny and looks imperfect. He looks lost and alone. The artist might have been trying to show the loss of heroism in our society and how all people now blend into the background.

If I made a statue it I would try and re-create a Renaissance style statue that showed an ancient looking greek hero morphing into a modern man. This would show that there are still great heroes in our society and would bring old art style back.

  31. The renaissance images depict man as a valiant and gloried figure. during the time of the renaissance, the artistic focus revolved around man, and more importantly, the epitome of the ideally prefect human. The modern image depicts man as a weak and morbid creature. It was during the 1950s that humanity knew the atrocities of WWII and the utilization of the atomic bomb, mans most destructive weapon. The renaissance figures are made of marble and bronze while the modern man is made of metal. The renaissance man is big and strong, while the modern man is weak. The renaissance man is standing tall, while the modern man is slouching. The renaissance man is completely black while the renaissance men are mad of color.
If i were to create a man of our era, I would make a man made enchained by electronic wires. He would look happy in a sort of ignorant bliss.
I would hopefully convey a message of the overwhelming impact technology has on the modern man. Too often today we are distracted by technological advancements, loosing sight of the more important aspect of life. Although we may think that technology liberates us, I believe that very often it can be one of our greatest vices.

  32. the sculptures have entirely different qualitities. not only are they made by different sculptors, they are influenced by the time periods. the sculpture of david has a quality of largeness, masculinness, and muscularness. It represents a powerful man, david, showing his largeness as an important quality. the skinnier more modern sculpture represents a weak, almost hopeless character. this lone character does not lift his chin up with great integrity like the statue of david. it is almost a depressing image the scultor was trying to portray.

My image would be of a modern man laying on a couch starring like a zombie into the tv. Mindless, thoughtless, motionless. the large man would be an inactive character without clean hygiene. eyes lids dangling low, slouched posture, with a bag of food laying next to him with crumbs of food on his chest. Representing the laziness and carelessness of society today.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The Renaissance images are much more detailed and lifelike than the modern sculpture. Also, it seems like the Renaissance artists spent much more time on the statue than the modern artist did. The Renaissances sculptures were much bigger and extravagant. The Renaissance artists were trying to show a more precise and detailed human because that had not really been done before then. The modern artist seemed to be portraying a more abstract aspect of humans today.

If I made a statue, it would be more like the Renaissance statues because they are more in depth and realistic. It would be of a very tall strong man, representing human strength.

    ReplyDelete
  34. The first major difference that stands out to me is the time period that the pieces were created. Secondly is the way the artist portrays the limbs in proportionality to the rest of the body. Also, the size of the sculptures is a major difference, the Renaissance sculptures are very large while the modern piece is life size. A less major difference is the time period the sculpture was created because sculptures are timeless pieces of art. Finally, the Renaissance sculptures are smooth, while the modern sculpture has many imperfections and is very rough.

My sculpture would be made of traditional bronze and be a life size image of a strong, powerful soldier. It would portray a loss of hope with the soldier looking very depressed to represent how few soldiers come back from war with no mental or physical disability. People would view this controversially with different meanings behind it, the most prominent being the effects of war on veterans. -Adam Lieskovsky

  35. The renaissance sculptures shown above display vivid detail and precision in the way they portray the power and strength of man. They demonstrate this ideal of man realistically, as the men in the picture are proportionally accurate with the common man. On the contrary, the modern sculpture is abstract and is not proportional to man. This sculpture portrays a different meaning of man: one of a weak individual. The material used in the sculptures also differ, as the renaissance artists use strong substances like bronze and marble whereas the modern artist chose a weak, crude substance.
If i were to make a sculpture, it would convey a loss of hope for man, using superfluous materials that distract man from the true problems in society. The materials would be crammed into the form of a man to represent his confusion in a declining society

the older drawings are more stick figurish where the newer ones are really detailed. they are also much bigger than the older ones. They differ because one is more realistic, one is bigger, one is not as detialed, and one is really detailed, and one is more powerful. My statue would be made out of electronics to show how powerful and smart and advanced we are.

  37. There are many differences between the modern and the olden statues.
    - The modern statue represents the modern man working to his full potential to be successful. His long strides represent his long strides to lead a successful life. Also, his legs are worn thin by the economy as he works relentlessly to be successful.
-The old statues represent the ideal man, the ideal hero of the olden times. This hero works relentlessly for his kingdom and works for pride, honor, and respect. The physique of the ideal hero is shown

    ReplyDelete
  38. The Renaissance sculptures focus on one man while modern could be any person. Also, Renaissance sculptures honor men who have had military success and modern have other symbolic meanings. In addition, Renaissance make the people larger then life and very life like while modern are more realistic in size and distort the human body. Finally, Renaissance always to seem to honor men while modern can show imperfections of the people.

My sculpture would be of a ring of people with some people holding hands and others not. Some people would be trying to make contact with the people next to them and others would be ignoring others. They would be made of different elements like metal, wood, marble, and others. The people would have different expressing on their faces.

  39. Renaissance and modern art have similar aspects within themselves but they also differ from one another. In relation to the pictures above, the renaissance pictures look more life-like contrasting with the abstract image of the modern art. Culture plays a part in the construction of sculpture. These sculptures exemplify how we lived “back in the day” and the ways we live now. The renaissance images have a much more classical feel to their sculptures. Another difference between the two are the material in which they were made.

My sculpture would represent a basketball team. It would be made of marble or bronze. it would show how teamwork is important in all aspects of life.

  40. During the Renaissance, artists created their works to depict the elitist qualities of the praised and successful. These types of people depicted include biblical figures such as David and military heroes. People looked up men of such high status because they lived in dismal times. In contrast, the 1950s was a time of prosperity for much of the western world. People were fascinated by the inordinate features of the "everyman" and his flaws.
A sculpture of a man representing the new millennium must include the ever growing fascination with speed and communication. He would be in a sprinters stance with a cell phone in one hand and a brief case in the other. He would represent the fast paced motion of the modern business world. This would also represent the economic booms and bust that come and go so quickly.

  41. My statue would be made of glass and diamond. The Statue would be of one big man just standing. This statue would show how man now in modern time can be brittle and weak. Also, the diamond would represent how man can be great heroes to others and how man can stay strong through hard times. The statue would convey both of hope and hopeless. Because the the both sides of the statue have different faces. The Glass side would show hopeless and the bronze side would show hope. In addition it would show that the glass side would have the face of insecurity and the bronze would have a face of pride and confidence. Overall, this statue would signify that man can sometimes be weak and hopeless and sometimes proud and strong.

  42. The renaisance sculpture of the bronze man was made to depict a man that was realistically created but still powerful. The david however is 17 feet tall to illustrate his being godly and above human trifles. Lastly the 1950s sculpture shows our human emotion rather than trying to depict the man as godly. Instead they show how the average man feels and what his life from his perspective is actually like.

If i were to create my own statue i would make it out of marble. MY person would be at least 13 feet tall and strong. He would be wearing the clothes of an honest job and would be extremely strong. He would represent what men aspire to be like and would illustrate hope rather than loss of hope.
My person would be much more strong than the 1950s sculpture but less so then the david.

  43. 1.they were sculpted/made during different time periods.
2.they are all of famous male figures.
3.the modern art is of the figure of an older man but the old one is of a man in what would be considered his prime.
4.the 2 renaisance statues show emotion but the modern one doesnt.
5.the modern sculpture is more abstract and the rennaisance ones are more realistic.

if i was to make my own statue i would have it be a guy with no emotion on his face surrounded by technology. his lack of emotion is due to the fact that his life has been engulfed by the internet and the world of technology. he shows no emotion and has very few relationships with real people in life.

  44. the difference between the statues are that the material looks very different. The older statues also seem like they are much bigger than the modern one. 45. The five differences between the three statues are: the modern statue is skinny and doesn't have much humanly features. the renaissance statues have fluid features. the modern statue is very brittle. the modern art isn't very realistic and the older statues have the distinct humanly features.

my statue would be like the modern statue. it would have skinny arms and legs. i wouldn't make it out of traditional materials like bronze or marble. i would make it out of some type of metal. i would make the face have a strong, proud look.

  46. 1) they were all made at different times
    2) all of the statues are of different dominant males except the modern statue seems to represent weakness and hunger.
3 the ones that are older are more specific and more detailed
    4) all the statues represent different things. The modern statue represents strife and the older statues represent power and prosperous times.
    5) they are all made by different artists

My statue would depict a solider holding a gun to show how strong the US military is. the status would be made of bronze and silver so it could never be destroyed. All in all, when people look at my status they would believe that the US is the strongest nation in the world and it can never defeated

  47. The difference between the tall skinny man is:this is obviously a modern sculpture because back then, sculptors of the Renaissance thought that the human body and the human itself was a sacred, holy thing. In this tall sculpture, the artist is trying to say that the human is not so sacred, not so perfect or holy.It is merely saying that there is more to the human person that anybody knows.

The Renaissance statues differ from the modern statue because the Renaissance era was all about how people sought how the perfect human. New ideas were created, especially the ideas of human perfection (mostly religious views). The modern statue is more of a mockery of these two "New" statues.

  48. Differences:
    1. Totally different eras
    2. They are most likely made of different substances
    3. Represent two different aspects of humans/society
    4. not proportional in size
    5. Made for different purposes

My statue would be of a person that is holding a book in one hand, and the flag of his country in the other. This represents how society is changing, how one race isn't dominating life.

  49. The differences between Renaissance and modern art is that the renaissance art is realistic and idealized, while modern art has exagerated features like long arms and legs. Renaissance art looks strong and sturdy, while the modern art looks brittle and frail. The Renaissance artists were trying to express humans as perfect beings with idealized shapes and sizes.
I would make a statue that is a man who is tall and muscular, but he is made entirely of sticks and leaves. This statue represents the difference between the Renaissance and modern art, where this statue looks brittle, and since it is made of sticks and leaves, it can catch on fire easily. This symbolizes today's society's fragile existence. Also, the statue be in a meditative state, meaning that today's society is very thoughtful about their actions.

these three statues are very unique in that they were and still are very popular and brilliant pieces of artwork. The big marble statue and the statue of the warrior on the horse resemble each other in that they are very full and strong. both convey a sense of heroism and have magnificent features to them. Both statues are made of expensive marble, and have grandiose muscular definition. The grandness of these statues stems from the time of prosperity they were made. Both were made in times of wealth and prosperity.
The other statue of the skinny man with no definition is very different from the first two. this sculpture was created in a time of great depression after the Holocaust. The man portrays a skinny, useless piece of what looks like shredded wood. The statue is actually made of metal, but it appears in the picture that it is made of cheap wood. This is to demonstrate the poverty and depravity of this man. The time periods in which this was built and the other two ones are very different. While one occurred in a time of the expansion of wealth and ideas, the skinny man was built in a very sympathetic time, and therefore portrays a malnourished man with little or nothing around him.

my statue would demonstrate the mass production of modern society. it is rare to find things that are unique and alone in society today, for everything is meant to be efficient and convenient. This is the issue with todays' society. Everyone is so concerned with efficiency that laziness takes over the ordinary person. my statue would be very extravagant and have an over-usage of resources. perhaps a big BOWL made out of gold, the bowl would then be filled unnecessary objects inside. There would be small items, representing extravagant material items that people believe they need today.

In the Renaissance statues, the two men are muscular and manly. They are portrayed as powerful and forceful. While on the other hand, the more modern statue is skinny and tall. He looks more feminine, and is portrayed as weaker. The Renaissance statues are also made out of a completely different material than the modern statue.
I believe the Renaissance artists felt proud and powerful when creating these statues. They had hope, and were optimistic. It showed how at the time society mainly focused on males being strong and hero-like. However, I think the modern artist was portraying a wise, older man. He was showing a man who preservers and keeps on going, which is a quality needed in today's society.
If I were to create a statue I would make a man who is strong and is climbing something, such as a mountain. It would show how you need strength and hard work today to survive in this economy. He would be smiling to keep the statue positive and symbolize hope.

  52. One day I came upon a man dying in the woods. He was talking about these sculptures as he died. He revealed 5 differences to me. The first was that they were made in different time periods and reflect the styles and values of the times. One shows strength and character and masculinity, whereas the other shows a thin and almost fleeting character, showing the relative anonymity of the average man. As his lifeblood flowed from his veins he lifted his eyes and said to me "One of them is made from marble, the other is iron." They also come from different cultures, one reflecting the Italian view of people during the Renaissance and the other is made by a modern Swiss. The Renaissance ones are more realistic to how humans look, which reflects the detail that they reflect, while the modern one looks more unrealistic. He also revealed to me that the products that they are made of reflect the ideas of the times for men, with the Renaissance art showing in majestic materials, showing the majesty of men, and the new one shows the blandness that most people today are seen with. The dying man sighed as he revealed the last difference to me, and begged for me to design a new statue in his honor. With tears in my eyes I rose from his side and vowed to create a fantastic sculpture idea for him.
I immediately set to work and decided that my work should show the majesty of people and their will to triumph. It would show my respected adversary with his fists raised to the sky and glancing upwards. It would reflect the majesty and triumphant nature of man. His face would be solemn and majestic, but with a gleam in his eye to reflect his triumph and majesty. It would be crafted of marble and be 20 feet tall in order to reflect the power of the man. This triumphant statue would be made out of marble to reflect the majesty and elegance of people as they triumph.

  53. Back then thet did not have the tools that they have these days. Also now a days they would not sculpt a naked man standing 20 feet in the middle of the city. If I could sculpt anything it would be a giant statue of barack obama standing next to the would house. The statue would be bronze and it would symbolize hope and strength.

  54. The modern sculpture and the Renaissance statues are different in multiple ways. The modern sculpture obviously looks very different. It is also a different form of sculpture. It's not realistic and almost has a cartoon-look to it. The Renaissance sculptures are very realistic and have no cartoon-look to them at all. It seems as if the sculptors for the Renaissance wanted to make the people look very strong, and not weak. The modern sculptor was doing the opposite and showed a different aspect of art. Also in modern times, we have communicated different feelings of art that were very uncommon in the Renaissance era.

If i made a sculpture, it would be of Manny Pacquiao. It would be made of bronze because it fits the phrase, "bronze knuckles." It would not be cartoon looking and would be of exactly how he looks. This would truly show his Filipino and athletic features.

  55. There is a distinct difference between the there sculptures. The obvious difference between the two is the size. Both Renaissance sculptures are larger than like, whereas the modern statue is no massive, although it may be tall, it is skinny. Secondly is the style, the Renaissance sculptures are more literal whereas the modern sculptures are more symbolic an abstract. Thirdly, the poses of the statues are different. The renaissance statues have poses of the men looking off into the distance and looking triumphant, whereas the modern statues evoke a more depressing move. Fourth, Both of the Renaissance statues have the men looking manly and bold, whereas the modern man looks like a wimp. Fifth and final, the talent levels involved with each are different, the renaissance sculptures are accurate size wise and constructed with not much more than the human brain, whereas the modern sculpture would have been easier to make for the renaissance artist.

The sculpture I would create would be a massive soldier of Ronald Regan, similar to the 17 foot marble sculpture, except it would be smaller and the choice of metals and stones used would be chose based on their colors. For example, his red tie would be represented by a red colored stone, like a ruby.

  56. There are five primary differences between the modern sculpture of the man versus the two Renaissance-age sculptures. Firstly, the modern sculpture does not accurately portray the human anatomy, whereas the sculptures from the Renaissance depict the human body in all of its intricacy. Secondly, the David represents the grandness and masculinity of humanity, specifically in male form. The Swiss sculptures portrayal of man is much simpler, almost to the point of being depressing. He seems to be lacking his "outer shell[body]," thus being left with only his "innards[soul]." Thirdly, the David is made out of marble, whereas the Swiss sculpture is made of a lackluster metal. This may symbolize the economy of those times. Fourthly, the man on the horse, as well as the David, symbolize a majesty or glory attached to the male figure. The Swiss sculpture is simply humble, if not depressed. Fifthly, they have different origins of creation. This can change both the look and meaning of the sculptures. As I said earlier, they main themes or designs of the sculptures most likely represent the feelings of the times in history.
If I created a statue of a man, he would represent a couple main themes or points. Firstly, he would be small in stature; probably barely one foot tall. This would be because I think that humankind is too proud of itself and stuck a a deep thought that it is far superior than anything else in existence. We are too stubborn need something to remind us that are not the "biggest fish in the ocean." Secondly, it would be made of metal but not shiny metal. The lack of luster and shine would remind us that even though we are strong, we are the only special thing on earth.

  57. The modern statue is extremely different then the two renaissance sculptures. The renaissance sculptures were developed to show the power and greatness of the men of that era. The modern statue is quite symbolic of society today. It represents the development of men and society over time. The renaissance sculptures were created from marble and bronze and the skinny man modern statue was made from metal a more modern product. The height difference between the sculptures is way different. The renaissance statues were much larger then the modern one because it shows that these men of their time were depicted as gods. The modern statue shows the ordinary mans development not so much to praise. The modern statue did not seem like it took very much effort to develop as the renaissance ones took master craftsmanship. The modern statue look like it’s walking toward something like towards a greater future or greater development. The renaissance statues look like they’re standing proud for their era.

My statue that I would create would be of a man covered in electronical wires. It shows the modern electronic society in which we live in. It also represents the how technology over runs our society.

  58. There are a few distinct differences between the modern statue and the two renaissance sculptures. One difference is the height and scale. I think that the two renaissance sculptures were built very large to symbolize the strength and power of that era. Another difference is the material used to make each sculpture. The two renaissance sculptures were built with marble and bronze while the modern sculpture was built with metal. Another difference is that the modern image is somewhat plain and not very complex, but the renaissance sculptures show great detail and feeling within the sculpture. My sculpture would be made of clear crystal because the feelings and emotions of humans vary diversely. No one person has the same qualities. The clearness would represent the unknown qualities of humankind.

  59. The modern man image displays an image of simplicity. The man looks like he's busy because he is in the motion of walking. I think that it is displayed as a skinny man because modern men deprive something. The sculpture also looks like it was made out of a material that is not expensive. I think that the sculptor made it have a big height because modern man has made huge technological advances. In the sculptor of David, specific parts of man of that time were sculpted. David was supposed to be the ideal handsome man of the Renaissance. It is also showing how the Renaissance was a time of new ideas, fantastic artwork, architecture, and rebirth of the Greeks. I think the artist of the Renaissance were trying to say that men in their time were philosophical, creative, and had the body features of an ideal man. I think that modern artist was trying to say that modern man has made lots of advances in life, technology, government, architecture, media, and etc. If I were to create my own statue that embodies the humans of our time, I would try to make it very complex. The complexity would describe how busy we are everyday. I think that the statue should be made out of clear glass and have a height of only about 14 feet. Some parts of it should be made out of blown glass. It would describe how powerful man has become since we have so much man power (in accordance to war). Although all these things are great and powerful, it would also describe how we've become so corrupt. We are corrupt because we need to have our surroundings adapt to us instead of us adapting to it.

  60. The Renaissance sculptures were very grounded in reality. The sculptures are very detailed in their resemblance to reality. The body structures are made extremely accurate. They are perfect. Its made almost as a shrine to man. The modern sculpture is not concerned with this. It shows the faults of man as opposed to the positives. The Renaissance sculptures were of great, large men. The Modern was life size. This brings up the different purposes for their creation. The Renaissance statues were made so grandly and so precisely to inspire. That is also why I they are found in public places. The modern sculpture did not need to be visually pleasing because it is made to make a statement or to make a commentary.
My statue would be made of different materials: metals, fabrics, random junk. It would look a crazy collage of a statue because I think the modern man’s life is made up of so many aspects and is so much more complicated than its ever been. The man would look strong and powerful. The modern man is stronger than ever. Technology has made everything possible for man. But this strength is threatening to man himself. The statue would have a hole through it to represent this.

  61. If I had to create my own sculptor, it would probably contain both a realistic and creative aspect to it. I would probably try to be precise on the body and maybe distort the face and other exterior body parts such as; the arms, hands, legs, and feet.

The two images of the man on the horse and the ideal image for men by Michelangelo are very different from our modern sculptures today. Many of the sculptures from today do not try to demonstrate or include religion as much as it did during the renaissance. Many of the artists when making their sculptures in the renaissance were trying to show the ideal image of a man, warrior, or maybe woman. The renaissance artists probably thought that the people in their society weren’t the ideal image of the fit human being, so the artist tried to make that ideal image for a human.

If I were to make a statue of a man standing up in an up right position, I would sculpt a man that is in the best shape he could possibly be in. The man would be similar to Michelangelo’s sculpture of the man. I would make this sculpture of a man defeating another man to show his dominance and to allow the viewer to create his or her own story. This sculpture would be made out of a hard everlasting stone that could last without spoiling in any weather condition.

  64. The more modern sculpture, the skinny bronze one, seems like it should be the older one, while the older ones might seem more modern. The older sculptures have more detail, are made of nicer material, are larger, depict the image of an ideal man, and overall, look more magnificent. Perhaps the more modern sculptor depicted a more accurate picture of a man, weak and skinny, while the older sculptors depicted the ideal human, more fantasy than reality.

My sculpture would be made with a combination of old style metal and marble in combination with electronics to symbolize are growing technological world but also an ideal simplistic way of life. The sculpture would also have a hopeful face, signifying the hope for a bright future, with an average human's body, symbolizing that we goals must still be realistic. Finally, my sculpture would be made white, a color of power, to show the dominance human's have, as well as our responsibility in this world. I would put it next to michaelangelo's David, showing how times have changed.

  65. The Renaissance images were to portray a sense of realty that glorifies the details of the body. In the equestrian statue, there is a pose showing strength and courage upon the horse, while the thin image of the man has less of a meaning than being modern. The Michaelangelo statue shows the man’s characteristics in explicitly accurate details.

The stilt man seems to show emotion being thin, tall, and grayish. In contrast to the Renaissance images where the emotions just stand out strong and vibrantly. The colors of the images and the material used to create them also show the meaningfulness of use of materials to represent what was being sculpted. The Renaissance images seem to be for glorifying purposes. The modern image probably represented an average man.

I see a difference of detail between the sculptures. The two from the Renaissance are chiseled to include more detail. Also, the modern sculpture is not proportionate whatsoever; the other two are more accurate. The only attempt that the Switz man tried to accurately portray was the anonymous man’s height. Of course, the material of the models are different. The expressions that the models exhibit are different as well. Finally, the time frames are different: one is made in the 20th century, the other two during the Renaissance.
My sculpture would be similar to the Renaissance men’s. I would accurately create a man whose details are close to, if not, perfect. I would make it out of marble. I probably would make it convey a sense of hope, but others may misinterpret my statue because I woud choose to make this statue as controversial as ever for attention. The man would appear puzzled. In fact, I would chisel the designs of jigsaw pieces onto the man’s skin. I haven’t decided whether he should be in normal clothing, nude, or well-dressed. (Maybe I’d include all three). The point of my statue would purposely challenge the audience to think of what this statue means to them. Their interpretations will always be unique, just like my statue.

  68. One difference between the two depictions of man is the size. The Renaissance statues were huge, massive works of art while the modern works are small and compact. Another difference is what the images want to convey to the person who is looking at the art. The Renaissance statues display an image of power, masculinity, pride, and grandness. The modern statue conveys an image of sadness, frailty, and maybe conveys images of sadness and weaknesses of humans. The materials the statues are made from are also different. The modern statue looks like it is made out of stone and the Renaissance statues are made out of metal or nice stone. A difference is how the sculptors chose to depict the man. The modern statues depict man as small, powerless, and faulty. The Renaissance statues depict man as strong, powerful, almost perfect. The modern statues look more realistic than the Renaissance statues because the modern statues truly depict man in the most basic form. No one is or can be as perfect as the Renaissance sculptors depict the men. The modern pictures epitomize the characteristics and flaws of true humans and don’t display them in ways that make people look vain and “perfect.”

I would want to make my statue out of stone because the ruggedness of stones can be representative of the flaws of humans. My statue would depict loss of hope because, realistically, there is no hope for this world. World peace isn’t likely to ever happen because of the way humans are created. There is no “perfect” human and that is what my statue would tell the readers. It would show the evil and flawed side of humans. I would like my statue to truly impact viewers and help them realize important things, not like the Renaissance statues that do not convey a true message and represent humans in vain ways.

  69. -The equestrian and David are both in confident poses and in readiness while the modern picture the man is portraying an anemic pose
-The two renaissance images are two brave men walking into the future to conquer whatever opposition stands in their way while the modern man is retreating from a great misery
-The modern man is destroyed probably coming from a lost battle while the other two show great confidence
-The modern man could symbolize that we were over our heads and found out that we weren’t as ready for the future as the renaissance sculptures portrayed
-The two other pictures are more realistic then the modern man is more figurative

I would make a crawling man colored in red to symbolize the suffering and bloodshed that was caused by these last wars that we had in Iraq. However the crawling man would also symbolize human will to keep moving forward and recover from the past’s iniquities.

  70. The renaissance statues seem to depict a more detailed form of our human life while our modern art seems to depict art in a human form with less detail. It seems to just capture the qualities of being human and not the detail that goes into it like the Renaissance artists saw. The Renaissance artists were trying to show the beauty in humans through their beautiful statues, while modern artists try to capture our beauty but in an abstract form that is found in everyone, not just one person that inspired the Renaissance artists.

I would make a statue out of marble and try to make convey a sense of hope.I would make it look like an ordinary man. I would want it to show man as forceful and powerful in order to show other people wit low self-esteem that even they can be powerful and have hope in themselves that they can do something in the world that would make a difference.

  72. These images differed a lot because the the renaissance images had a certain feeling of readiness and alertness. They seemed ready for battle. While the modern man sculpture seemed to feel like a sadness, as if he was trudging through life sadly. Also the materials are very uniquely different from one another. The renaissance sculptures are made with smooth marble and hard bronze. The modern man is made out of clay, but is no short in meaning at all. I think the modern man is probably the most powerful out of all of them.

  73. The two types of sculptures differ in several ways. The modern day sculpture is much more skinny and looks much weaker than the two renaissance sculptures. The renaissance sculptures are much more detailed and have more depth to them. The renaissance sculptures also look more life-like than the modern man sculpture. Also the modern man looks as though it was made out of clay while the soldier was made out of bronze and David out of marble. Lastly, the renaissance sculptures were much larger than the modern man sculpture, by about at least 5 or 6 feet.
My statue would be a life-sized man made out of electronics, such as computers, telephones and other random junk and would be made very loosely, but not be able to fall apart. It would represent how much the modern man relies on technology and how quickly all of it can collapse and ruin our society. The man's face would have a confused look on his face, like he didn't know what to do. The face would represent how if all technology failed most people would be lost and confused without the electronics.

  75. Some of the difference is that the two renaissance pictures convey is that they are very artistic the one astute that is made in the 1950’s is kind of ugly. The Renaissance pictures show detail in the statues. The 1950s statue is just ugly in my opinion. The Renaissance shows a lot more of the whole human body, in one of the pictures a horse is even shown in and all of the characterists of the horse are shown as well. The 1950’s picture does not have anything in its hand compared to the renaissance picture, which has the horse guy holding a sword, and David also has something in his hand. David is also shown very muscular and the 1950 statue is very skinny without any special attraction to it.

My statue would be very similar to the second statue of the renaissance, which is the statue of the guy on the horse. I like it because it just shows him looking like a boss. The only change I would add is that behind the man I would put this chick holding on to him. I would then add a lion next to the horse on its left, and a tiger to its right. That way the statue would really look like a boss.

  78. The sculpture of the modern man is more symbolic. With modern society, the image of man is not as glorious and more "common." During the time period of the Renaissance rulers and people of power were depicted as very muscular and in a sense, larger than life. In reality, the men were not as strong and worthy looking. The modern view of man shows more of the struggles through life. It seems as though he is slouching from the stress of his life whereas the man of the Renaissance is standing tall with his head looking up. This portrays the image of unequally and superiorness. These are only a few of the differences between the view of the modern man and the Renaissance man.

If I were to make a statue of what I think the modern man is like, it would be made of bronze. It would depict a man working hard at a desk. It would show hope in his job and in his success. It would also depict some sorrow although the main focus would be the confidence and accomplishments. It would not be made of gold to show the mans priorities in life. Material objects are not always the most important things. GO CUBS

  79. Modern sculptures and Renaissance sculptures are different in many ways. They obviously look very different and have a different style to them. Also modern styles are more symbolic and abstract where the Renaissance style is more literal. They were all made at different times, they are made of different substances, they are also not proportional, they are made for different purposes implying certain feelings the picture is trying to evoke whether it is into battle or surviving a battle, lastly they symbolize two different aspects of the society of the people.

My statue would be made of metal because there is a lot of metal in the world just like people. It would be a man and he would be reaching for his paycheck because that is mostly what all people are after whether it is just for themselves or for their family, everyone is searching and working for money to survive.

  80. The 2 types of images differ because the modern one is abstract and the renaissance statues are realistic. The renaissance statues are very large and the modern one is life size. The modern statue is very simple while the renaissance ones are descriptive and elaborate. The renaissance statues were made with marble and bronze while the modern one was made out of metal. The renaissance statues show the humans as strong and powerful but the modern one shows them as small and weak. I think that the renaissance artists were trying to show that humans were the center of the universe and were the most powerful beings. I think the modern artist was trying to communicate that ordinary people can be great. My statue would be like the modern statue of the man and it would not be made of marble and bronze, but instead it would be made of recycled stuff. It would show the man putting something in a recycle bin which would show that humans need to recycle their trash to help the earth.

  82. The Renaissance art went more for more realistic art to portray the actual features of the person being sculpted while modern art goes more for entertainment and disregarding the real features of the person. I think Renaissance art went for actual precision and detail while modern art just tried to make money.

If I were to create a statue i would make a president holding the world in one hand. This would show that the president decides the destiny of the world due to the amount of nuclear and powerful weapons which we posses. The president wouldn't be a detailed person but rather a person which reflects the kind of society we live in. He would be dressed in a suit of money showing the capitalistic society we live in.

  84. Because of the different time periods, there are different views of the people of this planet. In the last two sculptures, which take place in the renaissance era, the men are depicted as royalty and powerful. The one of David shows him as quite perfect. The one of the general shows power and rule over all.
Yet in the first picture, which shows an "anonymous man",shows a different perspective. It shows a man, possibly starving and on the verge of death, walking to the end. This sculpture shows man today not being perfect and going through some hard times.
