What is Patriotic Art?

This week at school, we are celebrating Patriotic Week. We will be thinking about what it means to be an American citizen and what America means to us. This celebration is coming right during the week when the nation will be commemorating the 9-11 disaster in New York City in 2001. In the aftermath of the 9-11 tragedy, Americans came together in sadness, fear and anger.  And it was in the immediate aftermath that the country began a pre-emptive war against the country of Iraq as a response to the destruction.  In this week's entry, I would like to to reflect on what our own ideas are about that event and the subsequent events that happened as a result of it through the study of art.

Art can heal, shock, instruct, inspire, provoke thought and sometimes provoke action. If you were to make an artwork about our nations' response to the destruction of the Twin Towers, what would it look like? What would it "say"? Would your art piece be about the fallen firefighters? Would you remember the innocent people who died? What did the towers represent?  What materials would you use? What do you think the public would say/think about your 9-11 artwork? Would it be a tribute, an historical commemoration or a controversial question?

Think about your ideas surrounding this historic event in the life of the United States.  Describe a concept that you would make in response to what happened to our country at the moment the planes crashed and then in the years after.  Some examples of art that speaks about our country at war areThe Vietnam War Memorial, and the statue of the flag- raising at Iwo Jima which commemorates the sacrifice of American soldiers in Japan during WWII.  You can also research mural art of the underground artist, Banksy, who has commented through his art on  many controversial subjects.

I'm looking forward to reading your proposals for a painting or sculpture or other kind of artwork based on the reflection suggested in this post.

Here are some examples by professional artists that were inspired by historic national and international events

Wall Graffiti by Bansky
In London, England

Post WWII Painting by Salvador Dali
This painting is an example of a response by a Surrealist artist to the carnage of the second world war.

Guernica by Pablo Picasso
This monumental painting commemorates the loss of innocent lives in the Spanish Civil War.

  1. My artwork would be a painting of ground zero in the day time with nothing but rubble and ruins. In the painting, sitting one one of the ruins would be a bald eagle sitting peacefully looking of the the right, or in the past. Sitting to the left of it would be another eagle perched with its wings spread, mouth open, and an army hat on its head, looking angry, looking to its right or into the future. This would be to symbolize how 9/11 changed our nation.

  2. My artwork would be a picture of the twin towers after the attack with a tattered American flag flying from the top. Surrounding the ruins and rubble would be the bodies of thousands of Iraqi civilians. At the bottom of the picture in bold faced letter there would be an inscription that says "An Eye for an Eye." I think my picture would be controversial and question the Iraq war.

  3. My painting would be of the twin towers and the plane right before it hits it. The weather would be raining and there will be lightning. The only area that would have light shinning on it is the twin towers. This would represent that God is always watching over us. It also represents that God has a plan for everyone even though it might be tragic.

  4. My picture would be of a boy looking up at a old looking and wavering American flag while fireworks go off in night. The message being conveyed is that the US, although having faced many difficulties, never ceases to amaze and inspire Americans. Our patriotic fervor renews with each generation.

  5. My painting would be of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Barrack Obama, and all the significant presidents all having a meal together in an old school diner. They would all be on a cloud watching over a battle take place on Earth. They would be pictured as Gods looking over the soldiers who are in the middle of a battle. This is patriotic because the soldiers are fighting for our nation and putting their lives on the line for the USA; the presidents are protecting the soldiers from above which means they are protecting the nation which is patriotic.

  6. If I created a picture demonstrating the patriotism in our country in the context of 9/11, it would be a portrait of a firefighter. He would be slightly blurred, giving him the appearance of being covered in a layer of ash and dust. He would have a solemn expression on his face, showing his discontent with the situation. If the viewer of the picture looks closely enough, he would notice the reflection of an American flag in the firefighter's eyes.

  7. My sculpture would be the Twin Towers half up with smoke coming out of the top and a crashed airplane. There would be fire and disaster all over the town. This is patriotic because it reminds the people of what happened on 9-11 and the many who were killed and severely injured

  8. The monument that I would create would be several statues, each representing people that were killed on 9/11. The statues would be formed in a circle with small walkways on the inside. Each statue would depict a separate scene, some of firefighters, others with innocent civilians. In the middle of the ring of statues would be a large American flag flying at half staff. This memorial would show that we will never forget what happened on September 11th and to represent how we came together as a nation and became stronger.

  9. My picture would be the Twin Towers with the planes in them, then coming out the other side of the towers, guns would be falling to soldiers on the ground where the guns would be picked up and the soldiers then running to planes. This would symbolize how the U.S. was quick to go to war, even though it is still controversial today whether or not there was enough evidence to go to war.

  10. My painting would be a picture of all the families affected standing over the rubble. Some people would be laying flowers in the ruins and others would be looking upward to where the towers were before the attacks. This painting would remind people that the families of the victims were also impacted by the events that occurred on 9/11.

  12. My artwork would be a monument dedicated to those who lost their lives in the 9/11 occurrence. It would be a statue of a girl sitting sad on the sidewalk with her face in her hands and a dropped flag on the floor. Approaching from the back would be a US soldier holding a picture of the girl with her parents, symbolizing some hope in the girls life.

  13. My artwork would be of the twin towers before the planes struck them. It would of a normal peaceful day. I would do it the year before to the exact day and time.

  14. In contemplating over what my artwork of the 9-11 scene would be, I came to the conclusion of a graveyard with the fallen twin tower's remnants and pieces laying over the graveyard. The graveyard portrays a memorial to all the 9-11 victims. In the graveyard running around frantically are firefighters doing the best they can to make the situation better.

  15. My idea for an art piece would be a folded $10 bill into the burning twin towers. (I can actually fold it so there is the burning twin towers.) The bills would be falling from the sky like ashes. In the background the actual twin towers is in ruins. The caption would be, "Remember 911, but stop the violence and war."
    -Vincent Truong

  16. The main thing that would need to be expressed is the confusion and sadness created by the sudden loss of the victims. My art would include the two towers being used as gravestones with an almost endless list of names of victims that would trail off until it is past the horizon line and the writing only looks like small lines. This would be meant to remind us of all of the people that died and how the pain never ends for those close to the victims of this attack.

    ReplyDelete
  17. My art piece would include nothing but the twin towers(in a dark gray shade)in a black background. The twin towers would be portrayed "bending"(note: not collapsed)in opposite directions. I pictured this image because even if the structures are physically gone, we continue to remember 9/11 and when the towers were still erected.

    ReplyDelete
  18. My art work would symbolize the victims of 9-11. I would have a plane flying to heaven and the souls of all the victims following behind it. God will be waiting at the Gates of Heaven, with his arms wide open, waiting to embrace the souls of His creation.

  19. If I had to create an art piece based on my reactions to the war we are currently waging, I would place a powerful and well-known figure, such as our president, behind legions of troops, arranged in rows and columns in precise order. I feel this would represent our country sending numerous soldiers to war with the few in command overseeing the war-effort in the United States. This would also mean that our nation will stop at nothing until this war has successfully ended in our favor.

  20. If I had to make a memorial on the 9-11 attacks it would be a large black granite stucture (like the Vietnam Memorial) but instead of a semi-circle, it would be a miniature model of the Twin Towers. And instead of windows on the model, there would be all the names of the people that died in the 9-11 attacks.

    ReplyDelete
  21. If I were to create an art piece in response to what happened on 9/11, it would show the rubble of the twin towers with two bald eagles flying out of the rubble, holding an American flag between them. This art piece would symbolize the powerful will of the U.S. and how it cannot be destroyed, even by terrorist attacks.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If I were to make a memorial for the 9-11 attacks I would put the different types of people affected by the attacks in a circle. They would be standing on top of rubble and would be looking up at a cross made of steel girders that are still standing. The different types of people standing around the cross would be firefighters, policemen, civilians and paramedics. At the top of the cross, a quote would read, " In God We Trust".

  23. my painting would be of the moment right when the planes hit and the explosion. this would be to show the giant effect this event had on our country. but then i would also have the people all next to each other to show that we remain united during the toughest times to stand by one another.

  24. My picture would be a group of military soldiers lined up in front of the Twin Towers site, and a large crowd of people around the the soldiers. There is also an american flag in the center of the 9/11 site. The soldiers would be saluting the flag as it is being raised to the top, and jets would be flying above simultaneously. This is commemorating those who died at 9/11 and the brave individuals who helped during that tragic event.

  25. Matthew Schwartz

For my portrait of the events of the 9-11 attack, i would portray from a helicopter point of view the pentagon and the plane that hit it. the plane would be in the side of the building, and from a sky point of view the entire pentagon would be neatly articulated with part of the building on fire where the plane had hit. i would like to show the picture as if it were raining and one of the rain drops had taken a high view picture of the flames and the shape of the unique building with emergency cars and personnel running towards the crash to help the injured people inside. The overall tone of the painting would be very dark yet extremely clear in detail.

    ReplyDelete
  26. To commemorate the 9/11 attacks, I would create a painting. This painting would illustrate a fireman looking straight at the view. He would appear tattered, tired, and covered with ash from the collapse of the twin towers. His expression shows the pain he has endured, and there is a slight indication of fear and uncertainty about the future. However, the several people in the background of the firefighter would show that he is not alone, no matter how sad and exhausted he appeared. Also in the background would be the rubble of the twin towers. This artwork would portray to the viewer the anguish and fear which every citizen held on this fateful day.

    ReplyDelete
  27. To commemorate 9/11 I would use a painting with a closeup of an eagle perched on rubble. In its left eye would be the image of the twin towers in flames. In its right eye would be the image of our soldiers fighting in Iraq. This would portray that actions have dire consequences even if they are "patriotic".

  28. My drawing would commemorate the firefighters who risked everything that day. A cloud of dust would cover the background with a firefighter running straight towards you, his clothes nearly black from the debris and his face showing the pain of his burden. On his shoulders is an exhausted or maybe unconscious Uncle Sam because they carried so many more than just the people caught in the towers that day.

  30. To commemorate September 11th, I would draw dust on the ground from where the Twin Towers used to be. But in the sky I would draw the American bald eagle carrying the American flag over the dust and I would draw the citizens of New York holding hands. This would symbolize how America stayed strong through this event and how we became stronger because of this. It would show how we cannot be destroyed or discouraged, and the hope we have as a country.

Admist the fire amoung the rubble of the twin towers, A firefighter comes out with an American flag in one hand and a baby in the other. He will raise the flag and nurture the baby. This will symbolize Americas rise from the tragedy, and the new generation will be represented by the baby in the other hand.

I would make a large statue depicting firefighters and police officers entering one of the falling towers. This would show the bravery of the New York Fire Department and Police Department which both responded to the attack on that day. On the base of the statue I would have the name of each person killed that day in a list going around the base of the statue to commemorate those who lost their lives that day.

If i were to create an art work in memorial of 9/11, it would be a statue of the twin towers, representing the time before all the destruction before the impact of the planes. This would also show our ability as Americans to rebuild and renew things that we have lost; and also a reminder for who we are.

  38. If I had to create some type of artwork for 9/11 it would be very difficult. I would start off with the scene of the towers on fire with smoke in the background. In front of this would be a wall of people holding hands. The wall would consist of several types of different people such as; firemen, police, business men, regular civilians, little kids, teachers, etc. This would symbolize all types of Americans coming together to move forward from such a tragic event.

  39. Michael Barreto-

I would organize a squadron of five fighter jets to use jet trails to write in the sky "REMEMBER 9/11" with flammable gas. Then I would have red, white, and blue fireworks go off in close proximity to the gas and make it ignite, thus making a midair-fire-message that would evoke a spirit of patriotism in all those watching.

I would create a mural with all the faces of all the men and women who lost there lives in this horrible event. The mural would be engraved in a plexiglass piece. Plexiglass so it wouldn't break. In the entire image there will be scattered colored spots. At these spots there will be policemen, firemen, and good samaritans, helping to save injured people in the debris. The towers represent a struggle, and a conflict. The helpers represent America, rising up to heal, and fight the conflict.

  48. My art piece would be a collage of many pictures of the faces of the victims and families of the 9/11 tragedy. These small pictures would make up an image of the current New York skyline. However, when you glance upon the Hudson River, you can see a vague image of the Twin Towers being bombed. The faces of the victims and families would show how so many lives have been changed after this tragedy. It would also help us remember those who have lost their lives.

  49. My painting would consist of the twin towers wrapped with a huge American flag on each tower. Hundreds of people along with firemen below would be watching the towers in the present year: 2010. 60. I would create a painting in which an American woman is drawn and there is a mirror in the middle of the page. On the other side of the mirror would be an Middle Eastern woman. Both women would have their faces buried in their hands and in the same pose, just like they are mirror images of each other. The women represent the sadness and death caused by both 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. This shows that all people are alike, no matter where they live. I would use this picture to convey the message that the pain caused by violence affect everyone. It would also get rid of the ignorance in most Americans, who think that all Middle Eastern people are "terrorists". My picture would not be a picture to commemorate anything, but one that would try to get people to realize what the war is doing to people.

  88. My artwork would be a picture of the memorial grounds for all the deceased soldiers uniformly identified by crosses on the ground. The ground will start from the left as a typical military memorial ground, having the well, kept grass fields and white marble slabbed mausoleums. As the audience looks towards the right of the portrait, they will see that the grass fields fade to sands and desolated jungles. On these terrains, the white crosses still remain, but they are surrounded by desecration: exploded vehicles, blood, and broken down towns. Above the left, there will be a cloud like image of soldiers giving a patriotic salute. Above the right of the portrait, there will be cloud like images of the leaders known to be responsible for the disruption of peace in the world.

  89. September 11 is a day every American citizen know about. On September 11 innocent civilian were killed by terrorist attracts, many of those civilians where firefighters.

Fire fighters risked their lives to save as many people as they could on September 11th and for that I believe they should be commemorated. I Phillip Melendez have made an idea to honor these firefighters by placing touches engraved with every fallen firefighters name. In my opinion the most appropriate place for this memorial is on ground zero. The memorial on Ground Zero will allow people to remember September 11, 2001 the day our nation became stronger.

  91. Thank you for sharing your ideas about patriotism and art. Just by looking at the pieces you posted, I can see a wealth of opportunity to collaborate with the art department at our school and let our kids do some integrated art/social studies lessons that might actually be meaningful to them. Cheers!
